Messaging service Snapchat has begun its monetisation strategy by asking advertisers to pay a minimum of $750,000 per day to reach its growing teen audience. While most companies are unwilling to pay such a huge amount, apparently a brave few have already signed on.

Snapchat believes that these rates are completely fair given that it has such a high amount of teens on the service – a demographic which is notoriously hard to reach. In comparison, a 30-second ad spot on American Idol will cost about $475,000 and a commercial on NBC’s Sunday Night Football goes for about $627,300.

Unlike other services like Facebook Ads, however, brands will have limited reporting on their campaigns and won’t be able to see which type of teen is viewing and engaging with their ads because there’s currently no age or gender breakdown. What’s more, the ads themselves disappear, just like the messages that people send.

Despite this, Universal Pictures said it received a good response to its initial ad buy, so they served a second ad for Dumb and Dumber To. How do you feel about ads appearing on the service?
